Great Lakes STOL is a STOL competition and fly-in, created by pilots, for pilots. Hosted by the Great Michigan Bush Co., we are a group of aviators who love exploring Michigan’s backcountry and surrounding states. There’s no formal organization—just a shared passion for off-airport flying, skill-building, and adventure. If you’re part of it, you just know.
In 2021, we launched Great Lakes STOL as a way to practice, improve, and share our short takeoff and landing (STOL) techniques. These skills allow us to access remote backyards, fields, and off-airport landing zones with precision and safety. The event quickly became more than just a competition—it’s a place to learn, connect, and enjoy the thrill of STOL flying together.
Our Partner is the Chesaning Sport Association, whose incredible support has made Great Lakes STOL possible. They’ve jumped in full throttle—providing pilot breakfasts, seating, personnel, and everything needed to keep things running smoothly. Without them, this event wouldn’t happen, making this truly a joint effort between our aviation community and Chesaning.
We chose Chesaning for its central location in Michigan, making it easily accessible for pilots from the east, west, and north. The entire event is donation-based, with no fees to attend or participate—just a gathering of pilots who love STOL flying.
Whether you’re here to compete, spectate, or learn, Great Lakes STOL is all about skill, camaraderie, and the pure joy of flying.
